Paddle to Copper Island

A Spring Paddle to Copper Island: Our Morning Adventure
May 22th, 2025

This morning couldn’t have been more perfect. The lake was calm, the sky was clear, and the warm spring air was just asking for an adventure. So Maddie and I (Monica) decided it was the ideal day to paddle out to Copper Island — one of our favourite spots, located just across from Shuswap Marina.

We grabbed two of our rental kayaks, our bright yellow paddles (for visibility), and our marina pup, Ruby — who was just as excited as we were. Of course, safety first: lifejackets for all, including Ruby! With some water bottles and hats packed, we launched from the marina and began our peaceful journey across the lake.

The water was incredibly still, and aside from the sound of our paddles dipping into the lake, there was total silence. It took us about 30 minutes to reach the halfway point, and we took the time to laugh, snap some photos, and take in the moment. This is the kind of peace that only the Shuswap can offer.

About 20 minutes later, we spotted the small sign marking the start of the Copper Island trail. We secured our kayaks and stepped onto the island — well, Ruby leaped onto it, starting the hike ahead of us! A few minutes (and a few calls) later, she was back at our side, wagging her tail and ready to lead the way.

The trail was in great shape and not too challenging. Within 10 minutes, we reached our first lookout point. A few more minutes and we arrived at a second one, this time with a clear view of the marina across the water. It felt surreal to stand there, knowing we had paddled all that way. We decided to go a little further — and we’re so glad we did. At the top, we were rewarded with breathtaking views and a landscape full of spring flora, including some fascinating mushrooms growing along the trees.

One thing that really stood out was how clean the island was. A big thank you to everyone who explores Copper Island and leaves it just as they found it — it’s a gift we all share.

Heading back down the trail was quick and easy. Back at the shoreline, our kayaks were right where we left them, and we slid back into the water. The lake was somehow even calmer than before. We passed a few fellow paddlers and some local fishers — a reminder that we’re all drawn to this magical place.

On the way back, Ruby decided she was a kayaking pro and proudly sat right on top of the kayak like the boss she is. We’re convinced she felt accomplished — and honestly, so did we.

All in all, the paddle and hike to Copper Island took about two hours round trip. It’s a rewarding, peaceful experience that combines just the right amount of physical activity with soul-refreshing scenery. If you’re visiting the South Shuswap and looking for a way to connect with nature, we can’t recommend this enough.

We’re so lucky to have Copper Island just across from Shuswap Marina — and we’d love to help you experience it too. Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a first-timer, it’s a trip you won’t forget.
