Safe Boating Guide for Shuswap Lake

Whether you’re renting a boat, enjoying your own vessel, or spending a day exploring Shuswap Lake, boating safety should always be your top priority. At Shuswap Marina, we want every guest and boat owner to enjoy a safe and memorable experience on the water.

Before You Leave the Dock

A successful day on the lake starts before your boat enters the water.

Before every trip, make sure you:

-Check current and forecasted weather conditions
-Ensure your boat is in proper working order
-Verify fuel levels
-Carry the required safety equipment
-Let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to return
-Review local boating hazards and navigation areas

Transport Canada recommends creating a float plan whenever possible and making sure all passengers understand basic boating safety procedures.

Required Safety Equipment on Board

Canadian boating regulations require pleasure craft to carry specific safety equipment based on the type and size of the vessel. Typical requirements may include:

-Approved lifejackets or personal flotation devices (PFDs) for every passenger
-Sound signalling device
-Buoyant heaving line
-Flashlight or navigation lights
-Fire extinguisher (where required)
-Bailer or bilge pump
-Emergency visual distress signals for larger vessels

All safety equipment should be accessible, in good condition, and ready to use in an emergency.

Wear Your Lifejacket

The simplest way to improve your safety on the water is to wear your lifejacket.

Many boating fatalities occur because a lifejacket was available but not being worn. At Shuswap Marina, we strongly encourage all boaters, paddlers, and passengers to wear properly fitted lifejackets whenever they are on the water.

Pleasure Craft Operator Card Requirements

Anyone operating a motorized pleasure craft in Canada must carry proof of competency.

Accepted forms include:

-Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)
-Approved boating safety certification
-Rental Boat Safety Checklist (for rental customers)

If you rent a boat from Shuswap Marina and do not have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card, our team will provide the required orientation and documentation before departure.
